Best Career Advice for 20 to 29 Year Olds

One of the best career advice I would give someone in their early 20s or late 20s is to continuously acquire advanced skills and experience. Choosing your career early is best for you. When you’re in your 20s, that’s 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29-year-olds, then it’s about time to decide which career path to take Many people who are 30 years and above didn’t have the opportunity to read this article. Many didn’t have anyone to advise them.

Career Advice for Early 20s

Honestly, I learned my lessons from experience. How I wish I had the opportunity to learn all these before now. I’m no longer in my 20s and I regret not knowing this early enough.

  • Don’t Get into Drugs, Smoking or Drinking

When you engage in drugs, smoking, or drinking, it’s always but a short -term and you’ll want to quit. However, quitting is always difficult and needs thorough self-discipline. These habits give short life experiences. After you’ve succeded in quitting, you’ll have absolutely zero memories of them. Imagine getting yourself involved in something that’ll waste your time for years without adding any positive thing to your life and you’ll still want to quit afterward (Remember quitting isn’t easy).  Drinking twice or thrice in a month isn’t bad but once you make it a habit, it’s very destructive.

  • Engage in Sufficient Workout and Exercise.

In your 20s, sufficient exercise and workouts will give you a nice shape, confidence, healthy lifestyle, helps reduce stress, and you’ll also look much younger. There are so many health benefits to body exercise. All these exercises and workouts are best in your early 20s and they’ll set the trend for the rest of your life. Your early development in life will depend on what you’ll be in the future. Whether you’re going to be a lazy turd or a hardworking one, early development matters a lot.

  • Start saving money now

The earlier you realize this, the better for you. The early 20s tend to be the foundation of anyone’s career. You need to start saving money as quickly as possible to invest in something lucrative. You can start your own business with your savings while others seek capital to start their business in their 30s, you’re already a business owner because you saved when you’re supposed to.

  • Avoid Reckless Spending

Spending money on expensive things in your 20s is not good. You’re just building the foundation of reckless spending. You can have as much free fun as you want. When I say free fun, I mean barbeques, social activities, and all kinds of PC, board, and sports games. Never spend money on clubs, parties, and cars. Having good friends, meaningful relationships, and financial security is far worth more than buying all those cars and spending at clubs and parties.

  • Don’t buy brand-name Products.

The world’s richest man Bill Gates wears shirts worth only $10. Always shop cheap and don’t go for expensive things. If you have friends who always care about what brand you’re putting on, then it’s time to change friends. Going for cheap items or second-hand products is something you should be proud of, it means you’re not materialistic.

  • Always Prepare your mind for Betrayal

This is very important because you can get betrayed by anyone at any time no matter how much you love them. I had a friend when I was in the university, his name was Joel. He dated a girl for more than 18 years before he finally broke up with her. This caused serious heartbreak for the girl. But she had no choice but to move forward because the future will always be brighter and better things are always ahead.

I’ve been betrayed countless times. I once dated a girl and promised to marry her. One day, I visited her unannounced and caught her with another man on her bed in an apartment I rented for her.

I had a neighbor whose name was Samuel. He stole $10k from his dad and the worst part is that this money was supposed to be used to pay hospital bills for her mom who was in the hospital.

People will betray you and also try to justify their actions. People can be jerks so don’t just get disappointed when it happens. What matters most are new experiences, old experiences are gone and gone for good.

  • Visit the Dentist

It’s always advisable to always visit the dentist maybe twice a year to check how healthy your teeth are. Always brush properly because it’s always more expensive to patch things up.

  • Focus on living long and well.

There is only one life and no one can love you better than yourself. Focus on a good and healthy diet, exercise regularly, and spend some minutes laughing and having fun. Make sure you have a healthy lifestyle.

Harsh Life Lessons Everyone Should Learn in their 20s

There are so many lessons to learn in life especially people in their 20s. I’m going to share with you life experiences of what everyone should learn in their 20s.

  • Nobody cares about you.

As I said earlier, no one cares about you. Besides your parents, no one really cares about you no matter how they pretend to love you. People will break your heart and betray you whenever they have the opportunity.

  • Best Friends Forever is a myth.

Change is constant. Everything changes including you who’s reading this. The moment you realize this fact, then you should know that there are no permanent friends anywhere. Many people will surely leave you and you’ll leave many. When people get into your life, they come for a reason. They’ll surely play their role and leave with time, so you don’t need to get emotionally attached.

  • Your Family is your Priority

Your family should be your number one because they gave you life and will always be there for you when everyone else is gone. Your family protects you. Keep and maintain a good relationship with your parents, you can’t afford to keep a distance from them.

  • Avoid Comparing yourself with others

Don’t ever compare yourself with another person. Everyone is unique in their way and has different career paths. Comparing yourself with other people will weigh you down and cause you emotional distress.

  • Never Try to Please Everyone

Never try to please everyone. If you try that, you’ll end up displeasing yourself and failing woefully.

I don’t know the secret to success, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone

  • Nothing is permanent, whatever that is causing you to worry for now won’t stay there forever. One day you’ll look back and you won’t see it.

  • Help is very good but don’t do it to your detriment
Always accept the fact that you won’t get everything you want in life. You can only try but some things won’t just happen no matter how hard you try. Don’t get discouraged.

Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans

  • It’s good to laugh with everyone but remember NEVER to trust everyone

  • You ALWAYS have a choice and this is a fact.

What is the Best Advice you got in your 20s?

My parents have always been my backbone, especially in my 20s. My mom would always call me each time I prepared to go back to the university. She will begin to advise me and caution me against doing certain things. Below are the 3 most important pieces of advice I got from my parents in my 20s.

  • If you don’t ask, you don’t find out

There is a popular adage that says “Anyone fond of asking questions doesn’t miss the way”.  You might get a “no” for the first time or a “maybe next time”. Meaning there is hope in the future if you keep asking.  You can also get a yes when you ask for the first time or subsequent times. There’s no harm in asking. So keep asking.

  • Remember where you came from

This one always comes from my mom. She’ll say remember where you came from, protect the image and integrity of the family, don’t throw it in the mud.

  • Live below your means

My dad would call me “Matt” as he fondly calls me, “live below your means and don’t spend all your money. Make sure you build an emergency fund. Whenever you have money, always save for the big goals you have in mind. When you cultivate the habit of saving, you will be surprised at how much you’ll save in a short period” You can start a business, build a house, marry, and buy a car if you are financially responsible.

What Should People in their 20s Focus on?

  • Don’t enter into a long-term relationship with someone who doesn’t share the same values as you
  • Don’t be ignorant of the message you’re sending to the world.
  • To be successful in your 20s, you must control your lust.
  • Always be intentional when making your choice. Don’t beat around the bush, go straight and make your choice. You either lead or you are led, there is absolutely nothing in between.
  • Built systems and not habits. There are new opportunities to update your systems daily.
  • Cultivate the habit of reading good books every day.
  • Time is very precious. Keep it to yourself if someone else can’t pay for it.
  • Being emotionally literate is key.
  • No matter what, just know that you must reap the good fruits of your labor.  It might not be immediate, but it must surely come.
