From my professional job experience, I can tell you that a simple, shorter, and more impressive application letter or cover letter is the best. If it’s your first job application to a company, the employer will be convinced that you know what you’re doing by making your application letter concise, articulate, and well-detailed. This application letter covers application letters to a store, hotel, customer service, sales, hospital, and teaching.
It’s advisable to start an application/cover letter with your address always at the top right side of the letter. Just below your address on the left side of the letter, address the letter to the Human ‘Resource Manager’ Sometimes you address the letter to the ‘General Manager’ then followed by the company name, address, and date.
Example:
The Human Resource Manager
XYZ Company Limited
November 21, 2024Below the company details comes the ‘salutation’. You’ll start with ‘Dear Sir/Ma,’. After the salutation comes the subject of the letter/position you’re applying for “Application for the Position of a Manager”
After that, comes the body of the letter. You’re expected to state in full detail the reasons for your application. It’s advisable to close the letter on a good note by expressing optimism. Then you can finally close the letter with ‘Yours Faithfully’, then your name below it.
What You Must Include in Your Application Letter
- Your name
- Your address
- Your contact details
- Your qualifications
- Your level of experience and skills
- Readiness to resume if considered for the position

How to Write a Good Cover Letter
A cover letter is very important because it allows you to draw the attention of the employer and make yourself stand out amongst other applicants. A good cover letter compels the hiring manager or the employer to go through your CV/Resume. The cover letter sells the candidate to an employer first before the CV and qualifications.
A cover letter is always accompanied by a Resume/CV. It gives details of your expertise and convinces the employer that you’re fit for the job. Cover letters are always concise and they cover points that aren’t in your CV/Resume.
Below is a simple format for a very effective cover letter;
Your name
Email ID
Phone number
Linkedin URL (not mandatory)
Place
The Hiring manager’s name
Company name
Date
Dear XYZ,
1st paragraph– You have to introduce yourself, and let the employer know the reason behind your letter. The job role you are applying for should be included in this first paragraph.
Second paragraph– In this section/paragraph, you need to state your current job role (if you’ve worked or are currently working), and your educational background (if you are a fresh graduate). Tell the employer your expertise. Give details of your experience, key projects, and the internships you did.
Make sure that all the job experience, skills, and expertise you mentioned are relevant and related to the job role you’re applying for. As a fresher, mention your certifications and skills that are relevant to this role.
Third paragraph– Tell the employer why you’re interested in this job role. Mention how much you admire the company and believe in the company’s vision and mission.
Para 4- Request for an opportunity to meet in person with the hiring manager. You can also provide your contact details.
Thank you for your consideration or Thank you for your time
Sincerely,
Your name
Make sure you don’t repeat in the cover letter whatever that’s already mentioned in the CV/Resume. It should be unique, simple, and precise to show the hiring manager that you are very interested in the job and that you’re a perfect fit for the job role. Never lie about your skills and experience because you’ll definitely get caught and you’ll lose an opportunity to land your dream job.
